Custom Architectural Metal Cladding for Fort Worth City Hall Public Spaces
Client: Key Elementary
Location: Arlington, Texas
Scope: Custom stainless steel handrails and powder-coated aluminum perforated partitions, fabrication + installation
Project Overview:
Key Elementary required a solution that balanced student safety, durability, and visual engagement within a high-traffic cafeteria and multi-level commons area. The goal was not just to meet code — it was to elevate the space.
The Challenge
The project had three real constraints:
- Safety + Code Compliance
Guardrails and barriers are needed to meet strict height, spacing, and load requirements for a K–5 environment.
- Durability Under Abuse
This is a cafeteria. Expect impact, climbing, kicking, and spills. Anything installed had to hold up over the long term without constant maintenance.
- Aesthetic Fatigue
Most school railings are purely functional and visually dead. The district wanted something modern, energetic, and age-appropriate without feeling gimmicky.
The Solution
Astro brought the architect’s vision to life by fabricating and installing a fully integrated system:
- Custom Laser-Cut Aluminum Decorative Panels
- Organic “bubble” pattern with varied perforation sizes
- Creates visual movement while maintaining safety compliance
- Powder-coated in vibrant blue and green colors, appropriate for an elementary school.
- Structural Stainless Steel Framework
- Clean, modern posts and top rails
- Corrosion-resistant and low-maintenance
- Designed for long-term abuse tolerance
- Precision Fabrication + Modular Install
- Shop-built assemblies for consistency
- Tight tolerances ensured clean alignment across long runs
- Efficient installation minimized disruption to school operations
Process
1. Design & Engineering
Collaborated with the architect to achieve a system that felt playful but controlled. Care was taken during the design process to make sure that all ADA requirements were met.
2. Field Measuring
- Astro went on site and took all needed field measurements to insure proper fit.
3. Fabrication
- Laser cutting of 3/8” Aluminum panels for precision pattern execution
- TIG welding and refinishing of all stainless steel joints to create a seamless appearance
- Powder coating of the aluminum panels for durability and color consistency
4. Installation
- Sequenced install to work around school schedule
- Anchoring and alignment critical across ramps and elevation changes
- Final finish and detailing ensured a seamless appearance
Results & Impact
- Elevated Environment
The space went from institutional to intentional. The partitions act as a design feature, not just a barrier.
- Student-Friendly Design
The circular pattern adds visual interest and energy without being distracting.
- Built for Longevity
Stainless + powder coat = minimal maintenance, high durability.
- Architectural Continuity
The system ties together ramps, seating areas, and circulation paths into a cohesive experience.
Conclusion
This project is a clear example of Astro’s core advantage:
Turning the required infrastructure into a design asset.
Most fabricators would have delivered a basic railing system.
Astro delivered a feature that defines the space while still meeting every functional requirement.
