Stainless Steel Column Covers for 1500 Post Oak, Houston, TX

Project Details

  • Client: Glazing Contractor
  • Location: 1500 Post Oak, Houston, TX
  • Scope: Fabrication of brushed stainless steel column covers for eleven large structural columns

Project Overview

Astro was contracted to fabricate brushed stainless steel column covers for eleven large structural columns at 1500 Post Oak in Houston, TX. This column, measuring 42 inches in diameter, included towering units that stood 27 feet tall at the building’s front entrance. Designed to enhance the building’s aesthetic while meeting structural durability requirements, the covers were designed from 12-gauge (.105”) stainless steel to withstand hurricane-force winds, due to their proximity to the coast..

Challenges & Solutions

  1. Ensuring Precision in Large-Scale Fabrication
    • Challenge: The large diameter and height of the columns demanded precise fabrication to attain a flawless, high-end finish.
    • Astro sheared and rolled each column cover section to precise specifications, ensuring consistency and a proper fit.
  2. Maintaining Structural Integrity for High-Wind Conditions
    • Challenge: The covers needed to be strong enough to withstand potential hurricane-force winds in Houston.
    • Solution: Fabricating the covers from heavy-duty 12-gauge stainless steel provided the necessary durability and structural integrity.
  3. Creating Uniform Horizontal and Vertical Reveals
    • Challenge: The design required ½-inch reveals at horizontal and vertical seams, necessitating precise alignment.
    • Solution: Astro laser-cut arc sections to create uniform horizontal reveals and meticulously welded them into the ends of each column cover section, refinishing the surfaces to eliminate visible weld marks.

Fabrication & Installation Process

  1. Design Review & Planning
    • The glazing contractor provided detailed field measurements for each column.
    • Astro reviewed these measurements to ensure an exact fit before beginning fabrication.
  2. Precision Fabrication
    • Each column cover section was sheared, rolled, and laser-cut to meet the required dimensions.
    • Horizontal reveal arcs were welded into place, refinishing performed to create a seamless appearance.
  3. Packaging & Delivery
    • The fabricated column cover sections were labeled, carefully crated, and shipped to Houston.
    • The glazing contractor handled the installation, ensuring precise alignment and integration with the building’s design.

Results & Impact

  • Striking Architectural Enhancement: The stainless steel column covers provided a sleek, modern appearance that complemented the building’s facade.
  • Exceptional Durability: The 12-gauge stainless steel construction ensures long-term performance, even in hurricane-prone conditions.
  • Seamless Integration: Precision fabrication and refinishing techniques ensured a flawless final installation that met aesthetic and structural demands.

Conclusion

Astro’s expertise in precision metal fabrication was crucial for successfully executing the 1500 Post Oak project. Astro offered a superior architectural solution that enhanced the building’s exterior by providing high-quality, hurricane-resistant stainless steel column covers with meticulous detailing. This project showcases Astro’s ability to fulfill complex design and durability requirements with unparalleled craftsmanship and precision.
