59 Years of Family Ownership: What It Means to Be a Family-Owned Metal Fabricator in DFW

There’s an important question that sometimes does not come up in a competitive bid process.  Nonetheless, it is worth asking:  Who are you actually dealing with?

In the architectural metals industry, the answer to that question varies more than you might expect. Some fabricators are divisions of large national companies, with ownership that is several layers removed from the shop floor and the customer. Some have changed hands multiple times as private equity groups have cycled through the space. And a few are still owned and operated by the same family that started them.

Astro Sheet Metal falls into that last category. We’ve been at it since 1967, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, under family ownership, through every market cycle the last six decades have thrown at us. That is not something we take for granted, and it is not something we think is irrelevant to the people who do business with us.

How It Started

Astro Sheet Metal was founded in 1967 by two men, Mr. James Mizell and Mr. John W. Paxton.  These men believed that producing quality metalwork and treating customers honestly were not complicated ideas:  They were just the way you ran a business. The company started small, in a small shop with a dirt floor and no electricity, and over time Astro built its reputation one job at a time in a market that was itself just beginning to grow into what the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex has become today.

The early years were about establishing the basics: a shop that could fabricate accurately, a team that showed up when they said they would, and a standard of work that customers could rely on. Those basics haven’t changed. Nearly everything else has.

What Four Generations Looks Like in Practice

Astro has now seen three generations of Paxton family involvement in the business, and the fourth generation is just getting started. The company has grown, evolved its capabilities, navigated changes in technology and materials and market conditions, and expanded from its original focus into the full range of custom architectural metals fabrication it handles today.  Whether customers need simple brake metal, handrails, panels, column covers, or complex full architectural metal scopes, Astro is ready, willing, and able to assist.

Family ownership in practice involves much more than just a press release.  At Astro, the people whose names are connected with the company’s reputation are reachable, working day in and day out in the business.  These are the people who are thinking about the next decade, not the next quarter. It means that when something goes wrong on a construction project, there is family ownership who cares about making it right, not just a checklist and protocol designed to manage complaints.

In a multigenerational family business, there is also a certain kind of institutional memory that is hard to replicate. The people running Astro today have heard the stories, absorbed the lessons, and internalized the standards of the generations that came before them. When the current leadership talks about how a job should be run or how a customer should be treated, they are drawing on a tradition that’s nearly six decades deep. That is not just nostalgia.  Rather, it is a real competitive advantage in an industry where consistency and reliability are the things customers care most about.

The Next Chapter

What makes the family story at Astro particularly meaningful right now is that it is actively moving into its next chapter. The fourth generation is already in the building , learning the business from the ground up just as previous generations did.  They will do this by being present, asking questions, and understanding that the reputation of a nearly 60-year-old company is something that gets built slowly and lost quickly.

That continuity matters to customers in ways that are sometimes hard to articulate but easy to feel. A fabricator who knows they are building a reputation their own family will inherit behaves differently from one who’s managing to a quarterly number. The time horizon is different. The investment in doing things right, even when doing things right is harder and more expensive in the short term, is different.  As “Big John” Paxton once said, “I always did a job the best way I knew how, whether or not that was how I quoted it, and I think that is why we have been around so long.”

What Hasn’t Changed

The DFW market today looks almost nothing like the one that welcomed the newly formed Astro Sheet Metal in 1967. The Metroplex has grown into one of the largest and most active construction markets in the country. The technology in the fabrication shop is unrecognizable from the early days. The range of materials, finishes, and products has expanded dramatically. The customers and the projects are different.

However, our core values of Quality, Proficiency, and outstanding Customer Service have never changed.  Our approach to every job is the same:  Show up. Do the work right and make it the best we can. Be straight with people about what you can and cannot do. Stand behind your work when something goes wrong. Treat a long-term customer relationship as something worth protecting, not just a transaction to be optimized.

Those are not complicated ideas. They’re just the way Astro has run its business for 59 years — and the way it intends to run it for the next 59.
